The quickest way to become natural is what most of us fear. The Big Chop! What is the big chop? The Big Chop is drastic and bold. It's when you cut all your relaxed hair off. However, most of us aren't comfortable with such drastic changes. Another way to become natural is to transition. It's subtle but can be challenging when dealing with two different textures.
Okay! Let's begin our transitioning process. The first step is to stop using chemical processors on your hair. Any product that permanently changes your curl pattern is considered to be chemically processing. This includes relaxers, perms, texturizers, jheri curl, etc. Now that we've stop using chemicals in our hair, we are beginning to see our new growth, we are about 2-3 months in our transitional phase. Approximately 1-1.5 inches of new growth. What should we do? Now we are dealing with two different hair textures, the new growth (natural hair) and the relaxed hair. I would recommend a protective style. Protective styling is anything that is low to no maintenance required. It can be cornrows with hair added, Senegalese Twists, full weaves(sew-in), Box- Braids, Crochet Braids, Marley Twists and the list goes on. In essence, you want to take the stress off the natural hair as it continue growing with the relaxed hair still attached. In between every style implement a deep conditioning treatment or a protein treatment and trim the ends. When your natural hair has grown to a length where you feel comfortable cutting the remaining relaxed hair, you can do so.
